JAKARTA — Fabio Quartararo assesses that Johann Zarco is a fairly consistent Ducati rider. That made him wonder why his compatriot did not join the Italian factory team.
Zarco, who is currently on the satellite team of Ducati Prima Pramac Racing, is one of the contenders for this year's world title. He is still in third place in the standings with a collection of 111 points, 61 points adrift of Quartararo at the top.
"For me, he is the most consistent Ducati rider it will be very good we can fight in the world championship like we did in the first half of last season," Quartararo said on the MotoGP website.
So far, Zarco has not occupied the first podium of the ten races that have taken place. However, he managed to climb up to four podiums in between, two each on the second podium and two on the third podium.
The two second podiums he got were in Portugal and Germany last week. Meanwhile, the third two podiums he won were the race in Mandalika and the ninth series which took place third in Catalunya.
"Neither of us started the season like 2021. Then we arrived in Europe and I think we both took a big step forward, we got on the podium a few times. Of course if you look at the last 5 or 6 races he is always fighting for the podium," said Quartararo.
"To be honest I don't understand why he didn't go to the factory team," added the Yamaha rider.
Currently, the factory Ducati team is looking for a replacement for Jack Miller who moved to KTM. Ducati is reportedly only considering Enea Bastianini and Jorge Martin as candidates, not Zarco's name.
The age factor is said to be a barrier. However, Zarco's opportunity to join the Ducati factory is still open.
