JAKARTA - Angel Di Maria has confirmed that he will retire from international football after the Qatar 2022 World Cup. The decision was made to make way for Argentina's young talents.

This was conveyed by Di Maria ahead of the match between Argentina and Italy, entitled Finalissima at Wembley Stadium on Thursday, June 2 in the morning WIB.

"After this World Cup there will be a time [to retire]," Di Maria said.

"There are a lot of players who are at international level, who are getting better and little by little they will show that they are of this standard," he continued.

Di Maria, who is currently 34 years old, has made 121 appearances for the Argentine national team. From that number of appearances, this former Manchester United player scored a total of 24 goals.

One of his goals for the Tango team he netted when he beat Brazil 1-0 in the Copa America final in July 2021. The win saw Argentina lift their first major title in 28 years.

Di Maria will leave PSG this summer. However, he has not yet decided which club he will join for next season.

Meanwhile, the match between Argentina and Italy is a collaboration between UEFA and Conmebol. They brought together the champions of Euro 2020 and Copa America 2021.
