Zurdo Determined To Beat Boesel To Face Canelo Alvarez

JAKARTA - Former world champion and Mexican light heavyweight boxer Gilberto "Zurdo" Ramírez (43-0, 29 KOs) of Mazatlán, Mexico, and Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy held a press conference on Monday. They discussed the agenda of Zurdo's fight against former WBA Interim Light Heavyweight World Champion Dominic Boesel (32-2, 12 KOs) of Freyburg, Germany.

Held on May 14, the 12-round battle for the WBA Light Heavyweight Eliminator Final will take place at the Toyota Arena in Ontario, CA. Zurdo considers himself the best in the division.

"I always want to put on a good show for the fans. There will be a lot of Mexicans, a lot of Latinos, a lot of boxing fans. I want to make a statement and fight the winner of Canelo vs Bivol, that's the fight I want and I have to get past this guy first. on May 14," Zurdo said, quoted by Marca, Thursday.

“I am really confident in myself and in my training. I know the fight will be in May but not the date but I want to stay fit. I am always training and ready for this great opportunity. Fourteenth of May, I will win 44-0, 30 KOs without losing. I'm looking for a knockout," he continued.

"It's a pleasure to work with a living legend and the Golden Boy family have welcomed me with open arms, and I'm very grateful for that. We have a great relationship not in boxing but outside the ring as well, they have a great relationship treating me like family."

"I'm the best in the division and I'm going to prove myself. I'm going to give everyone a good show. I've been looking for opportunities to fight with the best because I know I'm the best. Here in LA there are a lot of people. Mexico, the community is great and I love them, and they love me too. The Hispanic community is great in LA, which is why the Oscars love to bring all the boxers here and it's exciting."

Oscar de la Hoya also supported Zurdo, saying the boxer had the vision and drive to become a world champion.

"He's Mexico's first super middleweight champion, that's something we shouldn't forget. Getting to 50-0 that's the goal he has, it's great to see him fight. The 14th of May will be another tough fight for him, but that's him," said De La Hoya.

"We may have two 'fight of the year' candidates with Zurdo and William Zepeda. William is a very interesting fighter, he is unbeatable, he is ready to take on the world. He is facing a tough and tough opponent in front of a lot of action, it would be wrong one fight you don't want to miss."

"I want to make sure that I continue to box here in LA and I stay strong and make him grow to give these young players opportunities. We have established champions like Zurdo, we have young prospects who have dreams and that's what I want to build. I used to be a young kid from East LA who had a dream and there are lots of kids who have the same dream. So we want to keep him."

“One thing about Zurdo is that he comes out and fights. Anyone who has seen his last fight, it is one of those fights where you are on the edge of your seat. Every round is exciting, you never know what will happen. He is in great shape. well, he's always training, he's a professional, and he wants to give everyone a good show. And the great thing is he'll be in a great position to fight the winner of Canelo vs Bivol. So it took a while, but he worked hard and didn't never give up and the opportunity is near."
