JAKARTA - The Indonesian badminton national team secured half of the draw for the quarter-finals through the success of four men's doubles through the round of 16 of the All England which took place in Birmingham, England, Thursday.

The world number one pair Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo/Marcus Fernaldi Gideon advanced to the quarter-finals after defeating Japanese representatives Akira Koga/Taichi Saito in the rubber game 15-21, 21-18, 21-18.

"They played well defensively, we just had to be more patient," Kevin said in an official statement from PP PBSI in Jakarta, Friday, quoted by Antara.

The effort of the pair nicknamed the Minions to get through the second half was not easy. In a match that lasted 68 minutes, they had to fight hard to beat the 22nd ranked men's doubles from Japan.

Even in the middle of the match, Marcus had asked the medical team to check the condition of his ankle.

"Today the opponent played very well and didn't die easily. Luckily we were able to win. His ankle was a bit sore, it was quite annoying but I just tried to force it," said Marcus.

The success of the Minions was also followed by the second-ranked men's doubles Hendra Setiawan/Mohammad Ahsan who beat Liu Cheng/Zhang Nan. Hendra/Ahsan, who are familiarly nicknamed The Daddies, won the rubber game 19-21, 21-17, 21-14 over a pair from China.

Not only from the main athletes, the two backing pairs namely Bagas Maulana/Muhammad Shohibul Fikri and Daniel Marthin/Leo Rolly Carnando also contributed to the victory towards their inaugural quarter-final at All England.

Bagas/Fikri, who appeared together with the Minions in the first session of the match, defeated Malaysian men's doubles Teo ee Yi/Ong Yew Sin in the first meeting with a score of 24-22, 13-21, 21-17.

After defeating the 11th-ranked pair, Bagas/Fikri will then face tough opponents Takuro Hoki/Yugo Kobayashi from Japan who are in peak form.

Lastly, the Daniel/Leo pair also didn't want to miss following in the footsteps of their teammates and seniors by getting rid of Liu Yu Chen/Zhou Hao Dong.

Daniel/Leo's victory also had to go through a rubber game like the other three Indonesian men's doubles. This time the pair ranked 29th secured the score 20-22, 24-22, 21-16 after struggling for 67 minutes.
