JAKARTA - United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the situation in Syria, along with the fall of President Bashar al-Assad, presents historical opportunities as well as great risks, highlighting the possibility of the Islamic State group rebuilding its power by taking advantage of the situation in the country.
Syrian insurgent groups seized the capital Damascus without a fight on Sunday following a lightning strike that saw President Bashar al-Assad flee to Russia, after a 13-year civil war and more than five decades of his family's autocratic rule.
Foreign Minister Blinken said Syrians should choose their future, assessing the statements of rebel leaders to build an inclusive government were welcomed, but the real size would be in the actions they took, not just what they said.
"The end of this regime is defeat for all that allows barbarity and corruption, nothing more than Iran, Hezbollah, and Russia. This moment presents historic opportunities, but also carries considerable risks," Foreign Minister Blinken said.
"History shows how fast promising moments can turn into conflict and violence. ISIS will try to use this period to rebuild its ability, to create a safe haven. As our precision attacks show over the weekend, we are determined not to let that happen," explained Foreign Minister Blinken.
