JAKARTA - The Indonesian government through the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI) of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights held a meeting of the 71st ASEAN Working Group On Intellectual Property Cooperation (WGIPC) on Lombok Island, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB).

Director General of Intellectual Property of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights Min Usihen said, Indonesia as an ASEAN member country will support all programs agreed in the ASEAN Intellectual Property (ASEAN IPR) Action Plan 2016-2025.

Indonesia will also support the planning of the post-2025 Intellectual Property Rights Action Plan (HKI). This is to anticipate and consider the emergence of new technologies that predict the Intellectual Property landscape (KI) at the ASEAN level.

"Currently, Indonesia is a Country Champion for several initiatives listed in the ASEAN IPR Action Plan 2016-2025 related to copyright, 'SDGPTBT' (Source of Genetics, Traditional Knowledge, and Traditional Cultural Expressions), and IPR helpdesk," said Min Usihen in a press release, Monday, November 7, which was confiscated by Antara.

He also said that Indonesia has now become a leader in submitting action plans in the field of SDGPTEBT. The consideration can be seen from Indonesia's experience in handling KI protection with cultural diversity.

On July 7, 2023, he said, the DJKI Kemenkumham had also signed a cooperation agreement with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) regarding the establishment of the Intellectual Property Training Institute (IP Academy) in Indonesia.

According to the government, he explained, the establishment of the IP Academy institution will provide convenience in seeking information related to KI and educating stakeholders.

"Therefore, it is hoped that stakeholders will be able to understand and know more about KI as a whole so that they can utilize and manage their KI rights for businesses without violating the rights of other parties' KI," he said.

DJKI Kemenkumham representing the Government of Indonesia in a meeting that took place in the Mandalika Special Economic Zone, Central Lombok Regency, also expressed hope that cooperation with the ASEAN Intellectual Property Academy and ASEAN member countries that have implemented the Intellectual Property Academy could be established.

Furthermore, Min Usihen said that in an effort to support the creative economy, education about KI is an important effort in embracing young talents to understand the KI system from an early age.

This is expected so that the community can grow independently, especially in the economic sector, starting from business actors who can produce KI products.

"Indonesia also has various activities such as agents of intellectual property dissemination, IP Goes to School, Indonesia IP Academy as well as capacity building programs consisting of robust seminars, One Hour with the Minister of Law and Human Rights, and Mobile IP Clinic (MIC) which are held in all regions in Indonesia," he said.

ASEAN WGIPC is a regular meeting forum between ASEAN member countries attended by representatives of the Intellectual Property Office of ASEAN member countries.

The purpose of this activity is to discuss important issues that include the advancement of Scooping Study to identify priority areas of the ASEAN WGIPC, preparations for upcoming negotiations on the Upgraded IP Framework Agreement, the implementation status of the 2016-2025 ASEAN IPR Action Plan, the development of the 2025 HKI Action Plan, as well as support and coordination of ASEAN member countries and dialogue partners.
