Spreading Racism Eid In Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan Police Arrest Hate Speech Against China

JAKARTA - The South Kalimantan Regional Police (Polda) arrested a perpetrator of hate speech against ethnic Chinese who had spread leaflets containing a tone of racism at 19 points around the Trisakti Port area of Banjarmasin.

"The suspect named Watno from Blora Regency, Central Java was arrested on September 29, 2023 in Bati-Bati District, Tanah Laut Regency," said South Kalimantan Police Chief Inspector General Andi Rian R Djajadi during the disclosure of the case in Banjarmasin, Friday, October 27, which was confiscated by Antara.

In his confession, continued the Kapolda, the perpetrators distributed leaflets and posters of hate speech at personal initiatives after getting hidden whispers.

In the poster, the perpetrators consider the Chinese nation and its descendants to have no right to grip the Indonesian economy.

"So, the perpetrators do meditation and pilgrimage to the graves of their ancestors, then get a hidden whisper that sounds goodbye to the struggle for the archipelago," said the Kapolda.

Not only in Banjarmasin, it turns out that leaflets have been distributed by the perpetrators at 227 points in 14 cities including Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, Surabaya, Solo, Lampung, Palembang, Jambi, Pekanbaru, Medan, Palangka Raya, Sampit to Pontianak.

In carrying out the action, the perpetrators moved from one city to another, but the perpetrator admitted that he only rode a cargo truck and slept at the Public Fuel Filling Station (SPBU).

The suspect, who is now being detained, has been charged with investigators at the General Criminal Investigation Directorate of the South Kalimantan Police Article 16 of Law Number 40 of 2008 concerning the Elimination of Racial and Ethnic Discrimination and Article 156 of the Criminal Code concerning statements of feelings of hostility, hatred or insult to an or several groups of Indonesian people, is threatened with a maximum imprisonment of four years.
