JAKARTA - The Police Authority indai Prefecture, Japan has approved the use of sunglasses by its members while on duty, prioritizing maintaining their health and safety over concerns about appearance.
The police officer in the prefecture, located southwest of Japan, was previously not prohibited from wearing sunglasses. However, local police have long refrained from wearing it, for fear of being seen intimidating local residents, they said.
Official support for the use of sunglasses emerged on September 19, including those driving patrol vehicles.
It was done after officers revealed that they had problems while driving due to the heat of the sun, as well as wanting to protect their eyes from ultraviolet light.
"We started this to prevent accidents during patrols and reduce damage to eye health. We hope the public will understand it," said Yoshiteru Oba of the community police affairs division at the pandemic Prefectural Police, reported by Kyodo News Oct. 15.
