DPR Adds Work, Will Form Jakarta Air Pollution Committee

JAKARTA - Chairman of Commission IV of the DPR, Sudin, said that his commission will form a working committee (pemployment) to follow up and investigate the deteriorating air pollution conditions in the DKI Jakarta area next week.

The panel, he said, would be formed with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) as a partner of Commission IV of the DPR.

"Later, we will announce the committee during a working meeting with the LHK, the plan is for next week," said Sudin, quoted by ANTARA, Wednesday, August 23.

He said the formation of the panja would first be agreed upon with government representatives.

"After that, the committee will immediately work," he said.

However, the Sub-Department assessed that the polemic of air pollution was not only the responsibility of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK), because the large amount of exhaust gas emissions came from motorcycles, cars, factories, coal use, and so on.

He also admitted that receiving the KLHK report did not get information from the Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) regarding the large number of vehicle productions.

"So my response to air pollution in Jakarta is not only the responsibility of the LHK, but the responsibility of several ministries. I asked the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, whether there is a report on the manufacture or production of motorbikes or cars from the Ministry of Industry, they said there is none," he said.

Sudin also assessed that the trial of the work from home (WFH) policy for 50 percent of the state civil apparatus (ASN) was only a short-term solution, so long-term solutions were needed to overcome the polemic of air pollution.

"(WFH) this is not a long-term step, this is only temporary, what we think about in the long term," he said.

The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government conducted a trial of the work from home (WFH) policy for 50 percent of the State Civil Apparatus (ASN) from August 21 to October 21, 2023.

"Yesterday I asked the Secretary of State, yes, maybe on August 21, specifically for employees who do not come into contact, we try first to be able to provide comfort at the ASEAN Summit," said Acting Governor of DKI Jakarta Heru Budi Hartono after the ceremony for the 78th Anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia, Jakarta, Thursday (17/8).

Then, the WFH policy will be increased from 50 percent to 75 percent of ASN within the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government when the ASEAN Summit takes place on September 4-7.
