JAKARTA - President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Turkey firmly adhered to Chinese first principles, while Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Beijing wanted to deepen cooperation and trust with Istanbul when the two met in Ankara.

Wang Yi, who has just been appointed back as Minister of Foreign Affairs, made a day's working visit to Turkey, including meeting his colleague Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.

"China supports Turkey in upholding independence and taking the path of development that is in accordance with its national conditions," Foreign Minister Wang said, launching CGTN July 27.

"As representatives of the markets of developing countries and major developing countries, China and Turkey have a broad common interest and do not have a fundamental conflict of interest," Wang continued.

Noting that China-Turkey relations have wide prospects for development, Foreign Minister Wang said China attaches great importance to bilateral relations and is ready to cooperate with Turkey, to support and safeguard each other on national rejuvenation roads and on issues concerning their respective core interests.

"China will work closely with Turkey to focus on maintaining and deepening mutual political trust, to promote China-Turkey strategic cooperation to a new level," the senior diplomat said.

He added that China is willing to cooperate with Turkey to take advantage of the intergovernment cooperation committee mechanism to restart practical cooperation in various fields.

Meanwhile, President Erdogan said Turkey and China are countries with global influence, so the importance of cooperation between the two countries exceeds the bilateral scope.

"Turkey adheres to the one-China principle and believes that China's development is not a threat," he stressed.

He further said Turkey was willing to intensify high-level exchanges with China, strengthening the synergy between Turkey's Central Corridor initiative and China's proposed Belt and Road Initiative, deepening cooperation in trade, energy and tourism, which brings Turkey-China relations to new levels.

"Turkey does not support NATO to intensify its campaign in the Asia-Pacific region, and is willing to maintain communication and coordination with China on international and regional issues such as the Ukraine crisis," he added.

It is known that diplomatic relations between Turkey and China began in 1971, as quoted by the Daily Sabah. In 2010, the relationship was lifted to a level of strategic cooperation.
