If You Don't Want Public Trust To Fall, The Case Of The Death Of A Prisoner At The Banyumas Police Must Be Opened In Details

JAKARTA - Commission III of the DPR RI asked the police to thoroughly investigate the case of the death of a detainee at the Banyumas Police, Central Java. In addition, the National Police was reminded to take firm action against the police officers involved in this case for the sake of justice for the victims.

"Human rights (HAM) are not limited by the status of detainees, so even if someone is being detained by the police, he still has the right to be protected by his security, in accordance with statutory regulations," said Member of Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Gilang Dhielafararez, Thursday, July 20.

As is known, the suspect in the alleged motorcycle theft case (curanmor) with the initials OK (26) died with full injuries while in the custody of the Banyumas Police. Allegedly, OK was abused by fellow detainees.

The police have formed a special team to handle the case of OK's death. Temporary results, 11 police officers were involved where four of their violations were included in the criminal realm related to the process of arresting victims. Four police officers who committed disciplinary violations have now been detained.

Meanwhile, seven other police officers were subject to a code of ethics sanction because they were considered negligent when supervising the detainees, resulting in a beating against the victim. Gilang asked that the investigation carried out by the Police regarding this case be carried out by prioritizing public transparency.

"Open the investigation of the case of the death of a prisoner at the Banyumas Police as wide as possible. Don't cover up anything so that the victim's family and the public really know all the information related to the victim's death," he said.

"Strict action against the individuals involved must also be taken, because the problem of violence in detention has become a quite a worrying phenomenon," continued Gilang.

Gilang added that the standard for members of the National Police in law enforcement must comply with the provisions of behavior or code of conduct. One of them is not to use violence, unless it is needed to prevent crime.

"There is also a limit to violence by members of the police, such as helping to arrest violators of the law or suspects, that must also be in accordance with the regulations for the use of violence," explained Gilang.

The deputy chairman of the House of Representatives' Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Agency (BKSAP) reminded that law enforcers need to pay attention to the principle of presumption of innocence when facing suspected crimes. Therefore, said Gilang, violence against suspects is not justified when in detention.

"This means that in handling the suspect, the police must pay attention to the rights concerned, not to let members of the police ignore the suspect's rights," he said.

On the other hand, Gilang assessed that the Police's firm action was also to provide a sense of justice to the public over the death of a resident in detention, especially for the families of the victims.

"Don't let public trust in the National Police fade because there are 1-2 cases like this," he said.

"Give confidence to the public that the Police can enforce the law fairly, to prove that the police can provide good protection, protection, and services to the community, not the other way around," concluded Gilang.
