MURADUA - Flash floods hit parts of the South Ogan Komering Ulu (OKU) Regency, South Sumatra Province, eliminating two suspension bridges commonly used by villagers.

The activities of local residents became disrupted after the flood swept away the Gemuhak Tourism Bridge and a suspension bridge to a coffee plantation in Lawang Agung Village, Muaradua Kisam District, South OKU Regency.

"We cannot move across the river due to the broken suspension bridge, and even disappeared," said Muksin, a resident of Lawang Agung Village, quoted by ANTARA, Friday, July 7.

Meanwhile, Head of the Emergency and Logistics Section of the South OKU Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) Heri said that the flood had an impact on 366 houses in Kisam Tinggi, Muaradua, Muaradua Kisam, Runjung Agung, Buay Sandang Aji, and Buana Pemca sub-districts.

A resident's house in Ulak Pandan Village, Kisam Tinggi District, was swept away due to flash floods so that the occupants temporarily had to stay in a tent.

According to Heri, the flash flood caused one person to die and damaged two suspension bridges in Lawang Agung Village.

Floods also inundated four hectares of corn and banana plantations in Madura Village, Buay Sandang Aji District.

BPBD has established a disaster impact management post in sub-districts affected by the flood.

"We ask the public to continue to increase their vigilance against further flooding so as not to cause casualties," said Heri.
