JAKARTA - Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Microsoft founder Bill Gates in Beijing, whom he considered the first United States to visit his country this year.

"President Xi has always believed that the foundation of China-US relations lies with the people," said Chinese Foreign Ministry (MFA) spokesman Wang Wenbin as reported by ANTARA, Friday, June 16.

According to him, President Xi expressed the hopes of the Chinese people about a sustainable friendship with the US people.

"People should move more and communicate more in order to increase mutual understanding with each other," Wang said, imitating Xi's words to Gates.

During the meeting Xi conveyed his commitment to bringing China to modernization.

"We will never step on the old road that past forces built to search for hegemony," Xi stressed.

Therefore, Xi expressed his readiness to cooperate with other countries in the field of technological innovation towards a brighter future.

"China will actively participate and seek to address global challenges, including climate change, pandemic response, and global health," Xi said.

Meanwhile, Gates promised to strengthen cooperation with China in the fields of technological innovation, poverty alleviation, public health, research and development of medicines, agriculture, and share tips on the success of practical technology to several developing countries.

Gates' visit comes weeks after Tesla founder Elon Musk's visit and days before US Secretary of State Antony Blinken's visit to China scheduled for 18-19 June 2023.
