5.4 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Tomini Gorontalo Bay

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported an earthquake with a magnitude (M) of 5.4 in Tomini Bay, Bone Bolango, Gorontalo, Sunday, June 11.

Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono, said the earthquake was caused by deformation of the Sulawesi Sea Plate slab.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located at coordinates 0.05 deg LS; 123.15 deg BT, or precisely located at sea at a distance of 65 km southeast of Bonebolingo City, Gorontalo at a depth of 141 km, with an update parameter of magnitude 5.1.

"By paying attention to the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred was an intermediate type of earthquake due to deformation of the Sulawesi Sea Plate slab. The results of the analysis of the source mechanism showed that the earthquake had a mechanism for lower sliding (oblicance normal fault)," said Daryono.

The earthquake was felt in Gorontalo City, Luwuk with an intensity scale of II MMI (the tremors were felt by several people, light objects that were hung swayed), in Gorontalo Regency with an MMI I-II scale.

Until now there have been no reports of damage caused by the earthquake. The modeling results show that the earthquake has no potential for a tsunami.

"As of 09.10 WIB, the results of BMKG monitoring have not shown any aftershock activity," said Daryono.

BMKG appealed to the public to remain calm and not be influenced by issues that cannot be justified. In order to avoid buildings that are cracked or damaged by the earthquake.

Check and make sure the building where you live is earthquake-resistant enough, or there is no damage due to earthquake vibrations that endanger the stability of the building before you return to the house.
