JABAR - The Bandung City Government (Pemkot) plans to build a retention pond in Babakan Village, Babakan Ciparay District. The discourse if realized is expected to overcome flooding in the area.

Bandung Mayor Ema Sumarna said the retention pond would be built on land prepared for social facilities (fasos) and public facilities (fasum).

"We are responding to the aspirations and problems of the community that in RW 12 Babakan Village, Babakan Ciparay District, last night there was a flood," he said while reviewing the impact of flooding at Dian Permai RW 12 Housing, Babakan Village, Bandung, West Java, Wednesday, June 7, which was confiscated by Antara.

"Earlier, we saw that there was a social-fasum land that was handed over to the government. We will check (the feasibility) and the Ciptabintar Service (Cipta Karya Office, Construction Development and Spatial Planning of the City of Bandung, Red) will design a retention pond," he continued.

Ema believes that the construction of retention ponds can reduce the risk of flooding in the neighborhood of 12 Babakan Village.

"I'm sure the retention pond will have a significant impact, so the water will be stuck," he said.

However, Ema said, the construction of the retention pond will be carried out after the approval from local residents.

"The key is in the community to beat it, if we agree to build a retention pond, we will immediately work to dredge it according to the design made," he said.

In addition to planning to build a retention pond, Ema said the city government would lift the Cilimus River embankment by about half a meter to hold the water runoff to the mainland.

He also reminded residents not to build buildings along the river.

"We urge the public not to build illegal buildings along the river body and cover up the likes of control. Many of these have been permanent. We build public awareness," he said.
