JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said he had pocketed the name of the Candidate for Governor of Bank Indonesia (BI). The head of state will announce it Tuesday, February 21 or Wednesday, February 22.

"We will decide if not today, yes tomorrow, the names will come in," said Jokowi after reviewing the normalization of the Ciliwung River in Jakarta, Tuesday, February 21.

Gubernur BI saat ini Perry Warjiyo, telah lima tahun menjabat dan akan memasuki masa repurna tugas pada Mei 2023.

According to Law Number 3 of 2004 concerning Amendments to Law of the Republic of Indonesia Number 23 of 1999 concerning Bank Indonesia, BI candidates are proposed and then appointed by the President with the approval of the House of Representatives.

The President will propose a candidate for the Governor of BI who will then undergo a fit and proper test at Commission XI of the DPR before it is decided to be approved or not.

The names of the central bank governor candidates that have been circulating in the public include Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati, BI Senior Deputy Governor Destry Damayanti, Chairman of the Deposit Insurance Corporation (LPS) Purbaya Yudhi Sadive, and incumbent Perry Warjiyo.

When met at the Presidential Palace some time ago, Sri Mulyani was reluctant to comment when asked about her name, which was widely reported as one of the BI Governor Candidates.

Previously, Chairman of the Budget Agency of the House of Representatives (DPR) Said Abdullah said that President Jokowi should only propose one name for the Candidate for the Governor of BI to the DPR in order to reduce various speculations and unnecessary maneuvers in the political year.

According to Said, the ideal figure of the Governor of BI is the one who has chemistry with the government, especially the ministry of the economic and financial sector, as well as other authorities such as the Financial Services Authority (OJK) and the Deposit Insurance Corporation (LPS). This is because BI's position is very important as a regulator for the macroprudential sector.

"Especially after the ratification of Law Number 4 of 2023 concerning the Development and Strengthening of the Financial Sector (UU P2SK), we need many implementing regulations that must be made immediately. It takes quick and solid work between the Financial Sector Stability Committee (KSSK) in which there is BI element," he said.
