JAKARTA - Commission I of the DPR has warned the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) to actively supervise broadcast programs, both television and radio, especially entering the 2023 political year. Especially in anticipation of broadcast programs containing hoax content, hate speech, and black campaigns ahead of the 2024 General Election.

"KPI must be reminded about this now so that our broadcasting is sterile from such practices. KPI must also be firm not to be afraid to give a warning if there's a violation," said Member of Commission I DPR RI Christina Aryani to journalists, Friday, January 20.

For your information, Commission I of the DPR has just held a fit and proper test for prospective members of the central KPI for the 2022-2025 period yesterday. The results will be announced next week.

The selection of KPI members will be carried out using a voting mechanism and is scheduled for upcoming Tuesday, January 24, 2022.

Christina emphasized that the new KPI commissioner will have to do more optimally in supervising so that broadcasting content provides coolness and healthy and dignified political education for the community.

"The election for a new KPI commissioner is also at the right moment, because we are starting to enter the political year, so we hope that broadcasting supervision can be even more optimal. Not only at the center, but KPIDs in the regions must also actively carry out supervision," said Christina.

According to her, the challenges currently being faced by KPI include a public image, limited budgets, and monitoring of streaming platforms or new OTT (over-the-top) media. Even though it has not yet entered into the authority of the KPI, she said, streaming broadcasts and new media have in fact become a source of public entertainment.

Therefore, Golkar legislator encouraged KPI to immediately approve the P3SPS revision to support its future work.

"KPI also needs to immediately approve the revision of the Broadcasting Behavior Guidelines and Broadcast Program Standards (P3SPS), something that has been delayed since 2020. This is urgent to do," said Christina.
