KPK: Corruption Mode Is Getting More Sophisticated Because Of Technological Advances

JAKARTA - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) said the modus operandi of corruption carried out by criminals continues to develop. The sophistication of technology is the reason why the perpetrators continue to look for tactics to trick law enforcement officials. "The mode of corruption is also metamorphic to an increasingly sophisticated direction along with advances in technology and information," said Head of the News Section Ali Fikri to reporters, Thursday, December 29. Ali said there were a number of perpetrators of corruption who were found to have turned their hot money into shares and foreign exchange. This is in line with the findings of the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK). One of the corruptors found to have turned his hot money into shares was former Democratic Treasurer M. Nazaruddin. Ali said the former convict bought shares of corruption proceeds. "KPK has also handled M. Nazaruddin's MPPU on the purchase of Garuda's shares," he said. Apart from stocks, cryptocurrencies to other digital assets such as nonfungible tokens (NFT) also have the potential to hide the proceeds of crime. Thus, the KPK is preparing to do several things such as holding tracing, search, and confiscation training for cryptocurrencies with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). This training was carried out involving PPATK, investigators from the Corruption Crime Directorate of the National Police, the Corruption Crime Investigation Prosecutor at the Indonesian Attorney General's Office, and the Attorney General's Office at the PPA of the Indonesian Attorney General's Office. "This is a joint commitment of APHs in Indonesia to respond to the development of increasingly sophisticated modes of corruption," he explained. "This phenomenon must be anticipated and mitigated (preventing, ed) the existence of crime opportunities that allow crypto and virtual asset-based money laundering in the years to come," Ali concluded.
