JAKARTA - Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Wednesday that he would uphold diplomatic relations with Peru, a day after Lima announced they were expelling the Mexican ambassador, for interference with his country in internal affairs in Peru.

President Lopez Obrador has repeatedly backed the ousted Peruvian leader Pedro Castillo, angering the new Peru government, with officials saying the Castillo family had arrived in Mexico on Wednesday to accept political asylum.

A day after Peru said Mexican Ambassador Pablo Monroy was non-graft, President Lopez Obrador said Mexico would not cut ties.

"We will not expel anyone," President Lopez Obrador told reporters.

Even so, President Lopez Obrador once again criticized Peru's new government, questioned its legitimacy, and once again targeted US officials to meet with Peru's new president.

Earlier, a senior official from Mexico's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Martin Borrego, said he had welcomed the Castillo family to Mexico, where they would be granted political asylum.

In a picture shared by Borrego on Twitter, the official greeted Castillo's wife, Lilia Paredes, son and daughter. The family has lived in the Mexican embassy in Peru.

It is known, President Lopez Obrador said Mexico's "open door" to Castillo, which is currently undergoing 18 months of pre-trial detention under investigations into insurgency and conspiracy.
