JAKARTA - Indonesia has again been named the most generous country in the world according to the World Giving Index (WGI) 2022. The achievement in this annual report places Indonesia as the most generous country in 5 years and continues.

This year, Indonesia is ranked first in the most generous country with a score of 68 percent, 3 percent lower than the score in the previous year.

Indonesia ranks the top 2 from 3 categories or indicators that are WGI measures, namely donating money, donating to foreigners/unknowns and participating in volunteer/volunterism activities.

The results showed that 84 percent of Indonesians contributed money in 2021, much higher than the global average score of 35 percent.

Chairman of the PIRAC Implementing Agency (Public Interest Research and Advocacy Center) Hamid Abidin views this achievement as showing the strong tradition of contributing to Indonesian citizens who are inspired by the teachings of local religions and traditions that have been practiced for decades.

"The pandemic condition has no effect on interest and enthusiasm in contributing to the Indonesian people and only has an impact on the amount and form of donations donated," Hamid said in his statement, Saturday, October 22.

Hamid assessed that the success of philanthropic activists, especially Islamic philanthropy, in raising, managing and empowering religious donations, also contributed to Indonesia's achievement as the most generous country.

According to him, Islamic philanthropic institutions, especially the ZISWAF management agency and institutions (zakat, infaq, alms and waqf) have metamorphosis to become modern philanthropic institutions.

"They develop strategies to raise religious donations conventionally and digitally, as well as implement transparent and accountable donation management standards," he explained.

In addition, he continued, the ZISWAF institution has also facilitated the use of donations for strategic and long-term programs, such as economic empowerment, environmental conservation, child protection, to legal assistance and policy advocacy.

"It's no wonder that the donation of Islamic philanthropic institutions has increased during the pandemic, although the process of increasing was not as high as in normal times before the pandemic," said Hamid.

For information, The World Giving Index (WGI) is an annual report on generosity around the world published by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF).

This report was compiled by analyzing the survey results of more than 1.96 million respondents in 119 countries worldwide collected by Gallup since 2009. The analysis of data for the 2022 WGI report was carried out based on a global poll on March 31, 2022. This report describes the condition of generosity around the world during 2021.
