"Cooperation to prevent human trafficking must be strengthened between Indonesia and Cambodia," said Foreign Minister Retno when meeting with the Chief of the Cambodian Police General Neth Savouen at the Cambodian Police Headquarters, in a written statement Tuesday, August 2.
The meeting was held after 62 Indonesian citizens who were victims of fraud and human trafficking were successfully removed from an online scam company in Sihanoukville a few days ago. Such cases have been repeated since 2021.
"There are four things that require cooperation with the Cambodian Police, namely the handling of the 62 Indonesian citizens who have left, dealing with the remaining ones, law enforcement cooperation, and prevention cooperation so that it does not happen again," explained Foreign Minister Retno.
Responding to the request of the Indonesian Foreign Minister, the Chief of the Cambodian Police, conveyed his full commitment to providing cooperation. It was agreed that after this meeting, the police technical team between the two countries would immediately hold a technical meeting.
The meeting will discuss cooperation, joint investigations, mutual legal assistance, appointment of contact persons to assist in handling if similar cases arise again, and pay MoUs for cooperation between the two institutions for handling TTPO.
