Head Of BNPB In Garut: There Are Houses Affected By Flooding That Must Be Relocated Because Of The Potential To Be Hit Again

JAKARTA - Head of BNPB, Lt. Gen. Suharyanto, said that several houses in areas affected by flash floods in Garut Regency, West Java Province, had to be relocated to safer areas.

"There are several houses that have to be relocated, because if they live there they will inevitably be flooded again, affected again," said Suharyanto while reviewing the impact of flooding in Dayeuh Handap Village, Kota Kulon Village, Garut Kota District, Garut Regency, Tuesday 19 July.

The results of the interim study show that several houses are at high risk of being affected by flooding and must be relocated to other safer areas.

According to him, the government will propose relocation of houses to residents affected by floods and facilitate the relocation of residents' houses to areas that are safer from the impact of flash floods.

"This is in the process of negotiation, and an explanation to the community so that they want to be relocated," he said.

He said the government would provide housing for relocation and prepare temporary housing until the house relocation process was completed.

According to him, BNPB will allocate funds to provide temporary housing rental assistance for flood-affected residents who are willing to relocate their houses.

"While waiting for the relocation, there are also people who have to leave their homes, the Regent and Deputy Regent of Garut will prepare rented houses, and later from BNPB will help with housing funds or funds used for contracting," he said.

He also explained that BNPB together with the provincial and district governments will discuss steps to prevent and minimize the impact of floods and landslides in the Garut Regency area.

"We will carry out a review in collaboration with local governments, provincial governments, so that the same disaster does not repeat itself," he said.
