Mahfud MD: The Government Will Soon Form 3 New Provinces In Papua

JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs (Menko Polhukam) Mahfud MD conveyed that the government will soon form a government and a legal umbrella that regulates the filling of people's representatives' seats in the three new autonomous regions (DOB) of Papua.

"Alhamdulillah, three new autonomous regional laws in Papua, three provinces, were passed by the Indonesian House of Representatives last week. Our task (the government) is now, the first shortly how to form a government there. The second is to form a legal umbrella or legal instruments for filling people's representatives in the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Indonesian Regional Representative Council (DPD RI), and provincial Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) level I", said Mahfud, while giving a press statement quoted by Antara, Tuesday, July 5.

Currently, he continued, the government is discussing the appropriate legal form to regulate these matters, namely including including it in a government regulation in lieu of law (Perppu), presidential regulation (Perpres), or government regulation (PP).

Mahfud also said that soon the Ministry of Home Affairs (Kemendagri) will immediately propose to the government the legal form that regulates the formation of government and the inclusion of people's representatives in the three Papua New Guinea.

"In the not too distant future, the Ministry of Home Affairs will immediately propose a proposal or legal form that will be submitted to us (the government)", said the former Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court.

Thus, said Mahfud, the government will have sufficient time to regulate all matters relating to the three new autonomous regions of Papua, namely Central Papua, Mountains Papua, and South Papua, especially regarding the availability of people's representatives in the midst of the start of several stages of the 2024 election.

"Everything we just have to wait and God willing, there will be enough time. Officially it will become 37 provinces, of course, if it is based on the law, it's just a matter of implementation later, the government will determine what date the officials will be, how will the transfer of officials be", Mahfud explained.

All these things continued Mahfud, still require legal umbrellas that are more technical in nature.
