21 Provinces In Indonesia Experience An Increase In COVID-19 Cases

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Health reported that as many as 21 provinces in Indonesia experienced an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in line with the global situation which was also the same in the past week.

"As of June 23, 2022, at 18.00 WIB, there were the highest cases of 1,907 cases. 21 provinces experienced an increase in cases and 19 provinces experienced a decrease in cases", said Ministry of Health spokesman, Mohammad Syahril, in a press conference quoted by Antara, Friday, June 24.

Syahril said the increase in the rate of cases hit seven provinces in Java and Bali, the highest being DKI Jakarta with a positivity rate or the proportion of positive people from the total being tested at around 8.6 percent, exceeding the World Health Organization (WHO) standards below. 5 percent.

Meanwhile, the positivity rate in Bali is 2.4 percent, Banten is 3.93 percent and West Java is 2.45 percent, or still below the WHO standard, said Syahril.

"The national positivity rate so far has averaged around 3.97 percent. If we look at the trend of daily cases since June 1, 2022, there are 368 cases, and the highest increase on June 16, 2022, is 1,243 cases and gradually increased in the last two days to 1,985 cases and currently, there are 1,907 cases. It's still fluctuating", he said.

The number of cases of death due to COVID-19 on a national average was ten people in the past week.

Syahril, who is also the President Director of RSPI Sulianti Saroso Jakarta, said the increase in the national case rate was accompanied by the addition of the Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants which were reported to reach 143 cases, an increase from last week's 20 cases.

"There is 21 BA.4 cases and 122 BA.5 cases. The most domiciles are in Jakarta, namely 98 cases, West Java 29 cases, Banten 13 cases, and Bali three cases", he said.

When compared with the global situation, said Syahril, there were more than 546 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 with a death rate of 6.3 million more as of June 19, 2022.

At the global level, the weekly number of new cases of COVID-19 is reported to have increased in the Southeast Asian region, the Eastern Mediterranean, the United States, and Europe. The weekly death toll increased in Southeast Asia and decreased in other regions.

"In fact, in the United States the number of daily confirmed cases could reach 110 thousand cases", he said.

Omicron subvariant cases at the global level still dominate 99 percent of all global cases. The proportion of BA.5 distribution is 40.2 percent and BA.2 is 22.8 percent. The rests are BA.1 and BA.4.

Syahril said several countries were being hit by the fifth wave of COVID-19, among them South Africa was dominated by BA.4 and BA.5 with more than 20 thousand cases. "The death rate in South Africa is lower than the confirmed figures", he said.

The other country is Portugal dominated BA.5 in 37 days and has reached peak cases. The situation in the United States is also dominated by BA.2 and BA.5. Meanwhile, England is dominated by BA.4 and BA.5.
