SURABAYA - The Surabaya City Regional Disaster Management Agency said the tidal flood that occurred in a number of coastal areas of the City of Heroes, East Java, caused traffic jams, including Jalan Kalianak.
"The impact of the tidal flood is that there are congestion in several areas," said Head of the Surabaya City Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Ridwan Mubarun, quoted by Antara, Thursday, May 19.
According to him, tidal flooding is a natural phenomenon that routinely occurs every full moon, where the water experiences a maximum tide and inundates the surrounding lowlands.
"There are several areas in Surabaya that are prone to tidal flooding," he said.
Ridwan said several areas or villages that have the potential for tidal flooding are located in Romokalisari Village, Benowo District, Genting Kalianak Village, Asemrowo District, Kedungcowek Village, Bulak District, and Gunung Anyar Village, Gunung Anyar District.
Meanwhile, the potential locations for inundation/flood-prone roads due to tidal flooding include Jalan Kalimas, Pabean Cantian District, Greges- Kalianak Street, Asemrowo District, Sukolilo Baru Street, Bulak District and Medokan Sawah Street, Gunung Anyar District.
"The tidal water usually lasts 3 or 4 hours with the water level on the affected land being around 50 cm to 60 cm. After it recedes itself," he said.
When asked about the houses of residents who were inundated by tidal water, Ridwan said, it was not too much of a problem because the water receded quickly in the village area.
"The only thing that has an impact is traffic jams," said Ridwan.
