SURABAYA - East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa said that the repair process of the Ngaglik bridge in Lamongan Regency, which had collapsed, was immediately handled quickly. The repairs are predicted to be completed on April 22.

"God willing, on D-10 Eid or around April 22 2022, the Ngaglik Bridge will be able to operate again," said Khofifah in Surabaya, Thursday, March 31.

Khofifah has coordinated with the Central Java-Bali National Road Implementation Center (BBPJN), to handle and rebuild the access to the Lamongan-Tuban link.

According to Khofifah, the acceleration of bridge repairs is very vital considering the Ngaglik Bridge is on the Lamongan national axis road. He also said that the bridge is part of the Bromo-Tengger-Semeru (BTS) connectivity.

"So the collapse of the Ngaglik Bridge can affect the people's economic cycle. So, it is the priority of the East Java Provincial Government to immediately repair this bridge. Thank God there were no casualties," he said.

Khofifah explained that the bridge with a span of 25.8 meters, which was built in 1993, had already been widened. When the bridge collapses, the damaged area is from the old construction, while the new addition area is still intact.

"The cause of the damage is because the bridge design that was built earlier did not take into account the current load of vehicles. So in the future, all bridges need to be evaluated to measure the strength of the bridge," he said.

Khofifah said, when the Ngaglik Bridge collapsed, the government immediately brought in heavy equipment in the form of two excavators to dismantle and clean the collapsed bridge. The work took four days.

Furthermore, the broken bridge beams will be replaced with girder beams that will arrive within 10 days. Meanwhile, for the beam installation, it takes four days. After that, the bridge floor plate will be installed which will take 12 days.

"We have just paved the bridge which is estimated to take only a day. God willing, on H-10 Eid, we can operate again," he said.

While waiting for bridge repairs, said Khofifah, the diversion of traffic flow for heavy vehicles will be directed to Jalan Dandels and toll roads.

Meanwhile, small vehicles were diverted to roads within Lamongan Regency and also took advantage of the remaining intact bridges.
