Saifuddin Ibrahim Becomes A Blasphemy Suspect, Threatened With 6 Years In Imprisonment And A IDR 1 Billion Fine

JAKARTA - Saifuddin Ibrahim has been named a suspect in the alleged blasphemy case. In this case, he is threatened with imprisonment for 6 years and a fine of IDR 1 billion.

"The prison sentence is a maximum of six years and a fine of a maximum of Rp. 1 billion," said Karo Penmas of the Public Relations Division of the National Police Brigadier General Ahmad Ramadhan to reporters, Wednesday, March 30.

The threat of sanctions refers to the article suspected by the investigator. Saifuddin Ibrahim is suspected of violating the rules regarding blasphemy, hate speech based on ethnicity, religion, race and intergroup (SARA), to Electronic Transaction Information (ITE).

Where, the violation is regulated in Article 45A paragraph (1) in conjunction with Article 28 paragraph (1) of Law Number 19 of 2016 concerning Amendments to Law Number 11 of 2008 concerning Information and Electronic Transactions.

Regarding the process of determining the suspect, Ramadhan said the process was in accordance with the Criminal Procedure Code (KUHAP).

One of them, investigators have examined witnesses and experts, such as linguists, Islam, ITE and criminal experts.

"Sufficient preliminary evidence has been found to identify him as a suspect," said Ramadhan.

For information, Saifuddin Ibrahim had gone viral on social media because of his statement. He asked the Minister of Religion to delete 300 verses of the Qur'an.

The reason behind his request is because the verses are considered to be the cause of radicalism.

Saifuddin Ibrahim is also currently suspected of being in the United States. Bareskrim also cooperates with the FBI to find the whereabouts of the suspect in the alleged blasphemy case.
