MIMIKA - Cases of death of COVID-19 patients after undergoing treatment at the Mimika Hospital, Papua during the period from February to early March increased to nine people.

Mimika Hospital Director Dr. Antonius Pasulu, said the last patient who died with COVID-19 on Saturday 5 March morning was an elderly person, aged 73, male.

"On average, patients with COVID-19 who die have co-morbidities," said Antonius in Timika, Sunday, March 6.

Currently, Mimika Hospital is still treating 18 COVID-19 patients, in addition, there are several patients who are still waiting for the results of the PCR examination who are also still being treated.

So far, the Mimika Hospital has not been able to confirm whether the COVID-19 patients being treated are exposed to the new omicron variant or the delta variant.

Some time ago, Mimika Hospital had sent samples of throat and nose swabs from COVID-19 patients being treated to Jayapura.

"Until now there have been no results from Jayapura because they are still waiting for the delivery of reagents from Jakarta. As for the delta variant which was sent samples since last year, the results have just come out and all 100 percent are delta variants," explained Antonius.

From January to March 4, 2022, there were 538 confirmed positive cases of COVID-19 that were examined by the PCR machine at the Mimika Hospital.

Of that number, 90 people had to undergo treatment in the isolation room of the Mimika Hospital, while the rest underwent independent isolation at their respective homes under supervision by the Mimika Hospital medical officer.

Although the trend of COVID-19 cases in Mimika now tends to decline, Antonius advised local residents to remain vigilant by complying and enforcing health protocols and carrying out complete vaccinations, including the first dose, second dose and booster dose.
