Tanjungpinang KUD Fish Market Collapses, Several People Injured

TANJUNGPINANG - The Tanjungpinang KUD Fish Market in Tanjungpinang City, Riau Islands collapsed and injured several people.

Head of the Reconstruction Section of the Tanjungpinang Regional Disaster Management Agency, Prayoga, said one adult and a child were reportedly injured in the incident.

According to him, the injured child had to undergo treatment at the Tanjungpinang Hospital because there was a broken bone.

After a search was carried out, officers found that there were two more people who were injured because the market collapsed.

"We suspect that there is one more person below. However, it is difficult to evacuate because the sea is high," he said, quoted by Antara, Saturday, March 5.

The Tanjungpinang KUD Fish Market building collapsed on Saturday morning. Motorcycles parked in an alley near the market fell into the sea when the market building collapsed.

Motorcycle owners and residents who witnessed the incident worked together to pull motorbikes ashore, while government officials with the help of residents tried to save boxes filled with fish and dozens of bottles filled with fuel.

Tanjungpinang BUMD Operations Director Irwandi said traders had been banned from selling at the Tanjungpinang KUD Fish Market since the market collapsed for the first time about two weeks ago.

However, around 160 traders insisted on selling at the Tanjungpinang KUD Fish Market.

"Now it's happening again. It's collapsing again. It's worse. So we have to close this market so that there are no victims," said Irwandi.
