SAMARINDA - COVID-19 cases in East Kalimantan Province are still showing a fairly high graph of an increase with an additional 1,608 confirmed positive cases, while the number of recovered cases only increased by 280 cases.

Spokesman for the East Kalimantan Province COVID-19 Task Force Andi Muhammad Ishak said Balikpapan was still the highest contributor to positive cases with an additional 691 people.

Additional positive cases in Samarinda 371 people, Kutai Kartanegara 179 people, East Kutai 147 people, Bontang 139 people, Paser 52 people, North Penajam Paser 49 people, Berau 39 people, West Kutai 37 people and Mahakam Ulu 3 people.

"Positive cases continue to increase with more than a thousand cases, we hope that people will be more vigilant and maintain their health so they don't get infected with the virus," said Andi Muhammad Ishak, quoted by Antara, Friday, February 18.

Andi added that Balikpapan also contributed the highest cases with an additional 139 people, followed by East Kutai 56 people, Kutai Kartanegara 31 people, Berau 12 people, Samarinda 12 people, Mahakam Ulu 10 people, Bontang 10 people, West Kutai 5 people, Penajam Paser North 3 people and 2 people Paser.

"The number of confirmed positive patients undergoing treatment continues to swell, currently the number has reached 8,399 people," said Andi.

Andi explained that the most patients being treated were in Balikpapan with 3,537 people, followed by Samarinda 1,295, East Kutai 941, Bontang 882, Kutai Kartanegara 752, North Penajam Paser 328, Berau 238, West Kutai 228, Paser 186. and Mahakam Ulu 12 people.

"Nine regions of East Kalimantan are still in the COVID-19 red zone status, while the only yellow zone is Mahakam Ulu," Andi explained.

Andi reminded that the Omicron variant, which triggered the spike in cases in the East Kalimantan region, could still be suppressed with a record that the public cares and is disciplined in implementing health protocols.

"We've been through an explosion of cases, and in fact we can also suppress it, so let's fight this corona virus storm together so we can return to normal life," he said.
