Garuda Plane Destination Banda Aceh Fails To Land Due To Bad Weather, Turns Back To Medan

BANDA ACEH - A Garuda Indonesia plane from Jakarta to Banda Aceh failed to land at Sultan Iskandar Muda Airport (SIM) Aceh Besar due to bad weather, the plane finally turned back to Kualanamu Airport, Deli Serdang, North Sumatra.

"It couldn't land because of the weather, so the visibility was only 500 meters, so (the plane) returned to Medan," said Operations Manager of Angkasa Pura II SIM Syukuri Airport, in Aceh Besar, quoted by Antara, Monday, February 7.

Based on the flight radar website, the Garuda GA 146 aircraft was supposed to land on the SIM at around 2:45 p.m., but due to bad weather, it was finally decided to land in Kualanamu.

Syukuri said, based on standard operating procedures (SOP) if the visibility is only 500 meters or below 1.000 meters, the plane is not recommended for landing, but must hold it for a while.

"If the condition of the SIM base is good, so this is more about bad weather and visibility. As soon as the weather is good, then he goes back to BTJ (SIM)," said Syukuri.

Meanwhile, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) of the Aceh Besar Climatology Station said that this afternoon there was heavy rain in the Aceh region at around 14.00 p.m. local time. Then, from the satellite, it can also be seen that the growth of convective clouds continues.

"Earlier, at around 14.00 WIB, there was a Columbus cloud recorded, then visibility in the airport area was also very small, namely 500 meters," said BMKG Weather Forecaster Blang Bintang Nasyitthoh Azzahra Lubis when confirmed.

According to Nasyitthoh, this condition makes it difficult for the plane to land, especially since the clouds are also quite durable, coupled with the wind which is also quite strong.
