MEDAN - The Medan City Government, North Sumatra, has launched a cooking oil market operation at a price of Rp. 13,500/liter to deal with the soaring price of this commodity above Rp. 18,000/liter in this area.

"This cooking oil price is the highest retail price according to Minister of Trade Regulation No. 6/2022 for simple packaging of Rp. 13,500," said Head of the Medan City Trade Office, Damikrot in Medan, quoted by Antara, Thursday, February 3.

This cheap cooking oil market, he explained, was held by the Medan City Government Perumda Pasar in collaboration with cooking oil distributors to overcome the scarcity of this commodity in several places.

The market operation is carried out for five working days from 3 to 8 February 2022 in five traditional markets, namely Petisah Market, Halat Market, Sukaramai Market, Pasar Center and Sei Kambing Market.

"We hope that this cooking oil market operation will be useful in helping people in need at an affordable price," said Damikrot.

President Director of Perumda Pasar, Suwarno, admitted that this cheap cooking oil market provides 3,000 liters of oil per day in each market with purchases of up to five liters per person.

He admitted, from his side's observations at several traditional markets in Medan City, the price of cooking oil still varies with the highest price of Rp. 20,000/liter.

"There are even those who sell Rp. 20,000/liter, because traders buy at high prices. Cooking oil stocks also tend to be empty, especially in bulk in some traditional markets," said Suwarno.
