18.7 Kg Of Marijuana Papua New Guinea Failed To Be Smuggled Through Keerom Papua Throughout 2024

JAKARTA - The Keerom Resort Police stated that they had thwarted the smuggling of at least 18.7 kilograms (kg) of marijuana from Papua New Guinea (PNG) in 2024.

Based on the information received, there were 14 cases handled by the Keerom Police Narcotics Investigation Unit with the determination of 25 suspects, of which 10 were PNG nationals.

"The failure of the marijuana smuggling was due to the alertness of members of the TNI-Polri who served on the RI-PNG border and public information," said Keerom Police Chief AKBP Christian Aer when contacted on Friday, December 20, confiscated by Antara.

Christian Aer said there are two districts in his area that are directly adjacent to PNG, namely East Arso District and Waris District.

Both districts can be reached by land using vehicles, both two-wheeled and four-wheeled.

According to him, marijuana from PNG is usually brought by residents via footpaths and then sold to collectors, either from residents of Keerom Regency or from outside the area, which is then carried out by buying and selling transactions outside the area.

"It is the marijuana from PNG that is being traded in various cities in Papua," said AKBP Christian Aer, adding that to minimize marijuana smuggling, the Keerom Police together with local governments and leaders always provide counseling about the dangers of drugs, including marijuana.

"The Keerom Police will continue to work hand in hand to educate the public not to get involved in marijuana smuggling," said Christian.
