Ecuador vs Chile Preview: Waiting for La Roja's Surprise in the Caretaker's Hands

JAKARTA – Ecuador will host Chile for the 2026 Conmebol Zone World Cup Qualification match at Rodrigo Paz Delgado Stadium, Wednesday, November 22 2023 at 06.30 a.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB).

Chile coach Eduardo Berizzo has just resigned after a goalless draw when they hosted Paraguay at the Monumental Stadium on Friday last week.

Berizzo's resignation from the coaching chair means Chile faces an away match against Ecuador accompanied by caretaker Nicolas Cordova. The hope is that this tactician can bring revival to Chile.

Berizzo's future is already in doubt after the heavy 0-3 defeat against Venezuela last month. The latest draw against Paraguay was the second they got.

One win as well as two draws and losses each left Chile in eighth place in the qualifying standings. The only win so far was against Peru who are at the bottom of the standings.

They clearly need to improve this position if they don't want to miss the World Cup again as happened in the latest edition in Qatar. To qualify immediately, they must be among the top six teams in the final standings.

The journey to locking in this position is still very far away. The reason is, they have not yet met Brazil or Argentina, who rarely lose points in qualifying.

When compared to Chile, Ecuador's current position is much better. The troops made by Felix Sanchez Bas currently sit in sixth place in the standings after getting two points in the last two matches.

However, the number of five points they currently have is exactly the same as Chile's collection. It's just that their position is better because they are superior on goal difference.
