Armenia And Azerbaijan Agree On Basic Principles Of Peaceful Solutions

JAKARTA - Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan claims his country has reached an agreement with Azerbaijan on the basic principles of resolving disputes peacefully. However, the two countries still use "different diplomatic language" so they don't understand each other. This was conveyed by Pashinyan at the opening of the Parliamentary Assembly of European Security and Cooperation Organizations (OSCE) in the capital of Armenia, Yerevan. The Armenian leader, quoted from Anadolu via Antara, Sunday, November 19, also said that the prolonged conflict between the two countries related to the Karabakh region had caused losses.Pashinyan's remarks came a day after the UN International Criminal Court (ICC) hearing over Armenia's demands against Azerbaijan.Armenia accused Baku of violating the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination due to rising tensions in Karabakh recently, although a number of UN agencies firmly stated that they had not recorded any cases of Azerbaijan' discriminatory attitude towards ethnic Armenians.Earlier in September, Armenia ratified the Rome Statute, which formed the International Criminal Court, with the aim of suing Azerbaijan for its actions in Karabakh.Relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia have been strained since 1991, when the Armenian military occupied Nagorno-Karabakh who were internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, and seven adjacent territories. Most of the region was released by Azerbaijan in the war in the fall of 2020, which ended after a peace agreement brokered by Russia and opened up the possibility of normalizing relations between the two countries.
This September, the Azerbaijani army launched an anti-terrorism operation in Karabakh to enforce a constitutional order, which then made separatist forces in the region surrender.
