UK Supports ECOWAS Diplomatic Efforts To Resolve Niger Crisis
JAKARTA - Britain has shown its support for diplomatic efforts by regional countries to resolve the crisis in Niger after the coup toppled civilian governments
"Britania Raya supports the Economic Community of West African Countries (ECOWAS) calling for the restoration of the constitutional order and democracy in Niger," said a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as reported by ANTARA from Anadolu, Saturday, August 12.
Stressing Britain to support democracy in Niger, a statement welcoming "ECOWAS' determination" seeks all means to realize a peaceful resolution.
"We stand with ECOWAS in condemning the detention of President Mohamed Bazoum, his family and members of the government illegally, as well as the bad conditions in which they were detained, and called for their immediate release," the statement added.
The leaders of the ECOWAS organization said on Thursday they would "maintain all options for negotiations" to get a peaceful resolution to the crisis and order the activation of ECOWAS standby troops to restore the constitutional order in Niger.
President Mohamed Bazoum was ousted on July 26 in a military coup led by General Abdourahamane Tchiani, the former commander of the Niger presidential guard.
