Jokowi Receives Visit From The Speaker Of The Parliament Of Thailand, Malaysia, And Laos
JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) received an honorary visit from the head of the three ASEAN parliament simultaneously, namely Thailand, Malaysia, and Laos at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta.
"Most of what is discussed is regarding the ASEAN issue. First, of course, it re-emphasizes the important meaning of ASEAN credibility and integrity," said Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi in her statement after accompanying President Jokowi, as stated by the Press Bureau of the Presidential Secretariat as reported by ANTARA, Monday, August 7.
Furthermore, President Jokowi and parliamentary chairmen agreed on the importance of ASEAN centrality, especially in dealing with issues in the region.
"For 56 years, ASEAN has succeeded in proving that it is a contributor to regional peace and stability," said Retno.
In addition, President Jokowi also emphasized the importance of ASEAN to continue to encourage the implementation of the Five Points Agreement or theFive Point of Consensus related to the Myanmar issue.
"Mr. President in a meeting with three speakers from Thailand, Malaysia, Laos conveyed the importance of ASEAN continuing to encourage Myanmar, especially from the military junta, to implement the Five Points of Consensus," said Retno. On the same day, President Jokowi also received an honorary visit from the Speaker of the Vietnam Parliament Vuong Dinh Hue at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, Monday. The two discussed various things such as the borders of the Indonesia-Vietnam Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), the trade targets of the two countries, to renewable energy.

President Jokowi earlier on Monday, August 7 morning, attended the Opening of the 44th ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), and conveyed the importance of ASEAN countries to continue to be solid and trust each other so that the region can play its central role and continue to be relevant.
"The mutual trust and solidity of ASEAN is very important. Solidity between the governments of ASEAN members, between ASEAN member parliaments and with other stakeholders. If ASEAN is solid then ASEAN can play its central role and ASEAN can continue to be relevant," said Jokowi.
