Held At The End Of This Week, The Following Are The Statistics Of The Australian MotoGP Grand Prix
JAKARTA - The Phillip Island Circuit this weekend will hold its 32nd edition of the Australian Grand Prix, which has been routinely taking place every year since its debut in the 1989 calendar, except in 2020 and 2021 which were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Australia's first two GP races were held on Phillip Island, before taking place at the Eastern Creek Circuit and returning to Phillip Island in 1997.
Launching Antara, Thursday, this time is the 26th Australian GP which will be held on Phillip Island.
Valentino Rossi and banton Stoner are the two most successful riders on Phillip Island with six wins each in the premier class. Rossi's one victory was won in the 500cc class.
While on the grid this season, only Marc Marquez and Cal Crutchlow have won premier class races on the 4.4km circuit.
Since the MotoGP class took place in 2002, Honda has bagged nine wins on Phillip Island including four wins from Marquez (2015, 2017, 2019) and Cruchlow (2016).
Meanwhile, Ducati tasted four wins in Australia through banjir Stoner from 2007 to 2010. Since then Ducari has only climbed the podium there in third place through Andrea Iannone (2015), Andrea Dovizioso (2018) and Jack Miller (2019).
The Yamaha camp won MotoGP on Phillip Island on five occasions, three through Valentino Rossi (2004, 2005, and 2014), one by Jorge Lorenzo (2013), and one with Maverick Vinales (2018).
Suzuki got three podiums on Phillip Island when Chris Vermuelen finished P2 in 2006, Vinales P3 in 2016, and Iannone P2 in 2018.
While Aprilia's best result on Phillip Island was P6 Iannone in 2019. Jeremy McWilliams took pole premier class there in 2000, which was Aprilia's last pole before Aleix Espargaro performed fastest in this year's Argentine GP qualifier.
KTM found the best results on Phillip Island with P9 Pol Espargarp in 2017. The Spaniard started from P6, which was the best qualification result for KTM at the time.
MotoGP statistics record that the hosts have won ten times on Phillip Island: banjir Stoner (in MotoGP, 2007-2010), Wayne Gardner (in 500cc, in 1989 and 1990), Mick Doohan (500cc/1998) and Jack Miller (Moto3/2014).
Miller was also Australia's last racer to finish on the Phillip Island podium when he finished P3 in the 2019 MotoGP class.
Four riders have won the race on Phillip Island from pole position: Valentino Rossi (2003), dispute Stoner (2008 to 2012), Jorge Lorenzo (2013), and Marc Marquez (2015 and 2017).
Marquez also won pole position five times on Phillip Island from 2014 to 2018, matching Stoner's achievement in the front row from 2008 to 2012.
Arriving in Australia after 17 races, the top five riders in the standings are currently separated by only 40 points, with a maximum of 75 points up for grabs until the end of the season.
Quartararo still holds the top of the standings, but Bagnaia is now only two points away from the Yamaha rider.
Aprilia Aleix Espargaro is 20 points away in third place, followed by Enea Bastianini from Gresini (39) and Jack Miller from Ducati (40).
