Military Leader Burkina Faso Commitment To Fulfill The Time Of The Democracy Transition
JAKARTA - Burkina Faso's new military leader Ibrahim Traore will honor the agreed deadline for a democratic transition between his predecessor and the regional bloc of West Africa ECOWAS, he said in a statement.
The comments followed a meeting with the ECOWAS delegation sent to meet the junta, following last week's takeover of power in a second coup that hit the West African state this year.
Traore said Burkina Faso would "respect the dynamic compromise" agreed with ECOWAS in July to restore constitutional order within 24 months.
He also said the state would respect its international commitments, particularly regarding the protection of human rights, and would collaborate with the ECOWAS evaluation mechanism.
ECOWAS mediator who led the delegation, former Niger president Mahamadou Issoufou, on Tuesday said he was satisfied with the meeting.
Traore led a coup that toppled military leader Paul-Henri Damiba, who had seized power in a previous coup in January 2022.
Damiba sendiri diketahui berjanji kepada ECOWAS untuk memulihkan pemerintahan sipil pada Juli 2024.
The two takeovers were fueled by frustration over the growing insecurity caused by the rampant militia group insurgency that began in neighboring Mali in 2012 and spread to other countries in the south of the Sahara Desert.
Thousands of people died in raids on rural communities and millions were forced to flee.
A Al Qaeda branch this week claimed the attack that killed at least 27 soldiers in North Burkina Faso days before the coup took place.
