Malaysia Open 2022: Jonathan Christie Walks To The Semifinals, Anthony Ginting Hasn't Been Able To Stop Axelsen's Hegemony
JAKARTA - Indonesian men's singles player, Jonatan Christie, made it to the semifinals of the Malaysia Open 2022. He defeated India's Prannoy HS at the Axiata Arena, Kuala Lumpur, Friday, July 1.
The men's singles, ranked eighth in the world, locked the ticket to the last four of the Super 750 tournament after recording two straight game wins 21-18 and 21-16.
This victory enlarges Jonathan's win-lose record over Prannoy to 6-3. In addition, this is also Jojo's third consecutive win, Jantan's nickname, against representatives of India after the Denmark Open 2021 and Swiss Open this year.
Unfortunately, the men's singles Anthony Sinisuka Ginting could not penetrate the semifinals following in Jonathan's footsteps. His move was prevented by first seed Viktor Axelsen.
Anthony lost to the world number one with a score of 21-18, 17-21, and 12-21. This is Anthony's seventh straight defeat against the Danish representative.
Axelsen will next meet with Jonathan. On paper, Axelsen is still dominant with a 5-2 win-lose record over the 2018 Asian Games gold medal owner.
Apart from Anthony, the women's doubles ticket also failed to get Febby Valencia Dwijayanti Gani/Ribka Sugiarto. The pair lost their semifinal ticket after losing to Chinese representatives Zhang Shu Xian/Zheng Yu in two straight games, 21-13 and 21-14.
Indonesia still has several representatives who have not competed at the time of this writing. Among them are Shesar Hiren Rhustavito against Kento Momota, Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto versus Ong Yew Sin/Teo Ee Yi, and Hendra Setiawan/Mohammad Ahsan vs Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik.
