Russian Journalist Auctions His Nobel Peace Medal For Abandoned Ukrainian Children
JAKARTA - Dmitry Muratov is making the Kremlin hot again. The investigative newspaper editor Novaya Gazeta, who won the Nobel Peace Prize, has just auctioned his medal.
The goal is clearly to irritate Russia. The auction proceeds are to help children displaced by the war in Ukraine.
Quoted from The Guardian, Tuesday, June 21, Muratov was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize medal last October.
He announced he would donate $500.000 in prize money to charity. The goal is to give refugee children a chance for a future.
His 23-carat gold Nobel medal will go on sale in New York at 7 p.m. ET (midnight BST) on Monday, World Refugee Day. All proceeds will be donated to Unicef, to help refugee children from Ukraine.
In a video released by Heritage Auctions, which handled the sale, Muratov said he wanted the sale to be the start of a followable movement so people auction off their valuables to help Ukraine.
"If we look at the number of refugees, we are basically experiencing a third world war, not a local conflict," he said.
"This is a mistake, and we have to end it."
