In The European Union, Komnas HAM Explains Human Rights Enforcement In Indonesia, Including The Papua Peace Dialogue
JAKARTA - The Indonesian National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) conveyed a number of steps related to the promotion and enforcement of human rights in the country to the European Union.
"The two institutions discussed the situation for the promotion and enforcement of human rights in Indonesia, including the Papuan peace dialogue initiative initiated by Komnas HAM," said Komnas HAM Chairman Ahmad Taufan Damanik in a written statement quoted by Antara, Friday, June 17.
This was conveyed by Ahmad Taufan when he met with the EU's special envoy for Human Rights, namely Eamon Gilmore at the EU Foreign Service Office, Brussels, Belgium.
He said specifically that the Indonesian National Human Rights Commission had conveyed the steps that had been taken, and the work plan for the Papua peace dialogue that would be carried out by the institution.
Not only that, said Taufan, Komnas HAM also conveyed various basic developments in the human rights situation in Indonesia, including the resolution of several cases that became public attention and the challenges faced.
"Komnas HAM will continue to work intensively so that support for existing initiatives expands, and a peaceful dialogue can soon be realized," he said.
Meanwhile, the special envoy for the European Union for Human Rights, Eamon Gilmore, appreciated the steps taken by the Indonesian National Human Rights Commission, especially regarding the Papuan peace dialogue initiative.
Not only that, Eamon Gilmore also appreciated the positive development of human rights in Indonesia. In principle, the European Union respects Indonesia's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
"The peaceful settlement of Papua is the best way in the context of human rights," he said.
As a representative of the European Union, Eamon Gilmore admitted that he is fully committed to supporting the steps that will be taken by the Indonesian National Human Rights Commission, especially in terms of upholding and promoting human rights.
