BMKG: Beware Of Thunderstorms In NTT Due To The Emergence Of Cyclonic Areas
KUPANG - El Tari Kupang Meteorological Station, Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) appealed to residents to be aware of the potential for rain accompanied by lightning in the NTT region due to the emergence of cyclonic areas.
"A cyclonic area has been observed to appear in the Indian Ocean south of NTT which causes some areas of NTT to still have the potential to experience rain accompanied by lightning," said Head of the BMKG El Tari Kupang Meteorological Station Agung Sudiono Abadi in Kupang, Antara, Thursday, June 2.
He said this was related to weather early warnings in the NTT region for the next three days (2-4 June) 2022. The emergence of cyclonic areas has the potential to cause light to heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds of short duration in NTT.
Potentially affected areas include West Manggarai, Manggarai, East Manggarai, Ngada, Nagekeo, Ende, Sikka, Lembata, Alor.
In addition, Belu, Malacca, North Central Timor, South Central Timor, Kupang Regency, Kupang City, Sabu Raijua, West Sumba, Southwest Sumba, East Sumba.
Agung appealed to the people in these areas to be aware of the potential for extreme weather that could trigger hydrometeorological disasters such as floods, flash floods, landslides, and lightning strikes.
"If it rains with a long duration, people need to find safe shelter, especially those who live in hilly or steep areas," he said.
He further said that apart from the potential for rain, the community also needs to be aware of the potential for strong winds in the dry season which can cause widespread forest and land fires in the NTT area.
"NTT has entered the dry season, so when hotspots appear, they have the potential to spread quickly, especially when there are strong dry winds," said Agung Sudiono Abadi.
