Liz Truss Sends A Team To Ukraine To Find Evidence Of War Crimes

JAKARTA - British authorities say they are sending experts to help Ukraine gather evidence and prosecute war crimes, with a team due to arrive in Poland in early May 2022.

Ukraine says it is investigating about 7,600 possible war crimes and at least 500 suspects following Russia's February 24 invasion of Ukraine.

"Russia brought barbarity into Ukraine and committed brutal atrocities, including against women. British experts will help uncover the truth and hold (Russian President Vladimir) Putin's regime accountable for its actions," Foreign Minister Liz Truss said.

The announcement came as Truss traveled to The Hague to meet International Criminal Court President Judge Piotr Hofmanski and his Dutch counterpart Wopke Hoekstra.

"The special team will assist the Ukrainian government as they gather evidence and prosecute war crimes and will engage experts in conflict-related sexual violence," the foreign ministry said in a statement.

Moscow calls its actions in Ukraine a "special operation" aimed at weakening Kiev's military power and protecting Russian-speaking people living in eastern Ukraine.
