Undergoing Technological Improvements, Russian Shipyards Will Be Able To Build Fifth Generation Nuclear Submarines

JAKARTA - With the status as the only shipyard that builds nuclear submarines in Russia, apart from producing ships, submarines and military equipment for the country's navy, the Sevmash Shipyard will receive technological upgrades.

Sevmash shipbuilding technology upgrades in northern Russia will allow it to build fifth-generation nuclear-powered submarines, says factory CEO Mikhail Budnichenko

"Completing the global task of upgrading to a new technical level will allow us to not only build fifth-generation submarines and other naval equipment that enhances our country's defense capabilities and economic potential. But also complete other possible tasks for shipyards," he told TASS. as quoted March 19.

Budnichenko further said that large-scale technical upgrades were taking place at the shipyard facility. Budnichenko explained, the company is preparing to introduce a modular method of submarine construction.

Russia's Severodvinsk-based Sevmash Shipyard (a subsidiary of the United Shipbuilding Corporation) said it had approved the concept of modular submarine construction in 2021. The new technology allows the assembly of the submarine hull from large modules, reducing docking work time by 18 months.

One of the nuclear submarines currently being worked on by the shipyard and will enter sea trials in June, is Project 885M (Yasen-M), the second series of the K-571 Krasnoyarsk multipurpose nuclear-powered submarine.

After the shipbuilder's sea trials, the nuclear-powered submarine Krasnoyarsk will enter state trials to check its weapons systems. By the end of this year, the nuclear-powered submarine will enter service with Russia's Pacific Fleet.

To note, the Project 885M nuclear-powered submarine was designed by the St. Malakhit Design Bureau of Machine-Building. Petersburg. Currently, six Project 885M submarines are under various stages of construction at the Sevmash Shipyard.
