Chandra Asri, Owned By Conglomerate Prajogo Pangestu, Turns Crackle Plastic Waste Into Asphalt To Build Roads In Garut

JAKARTA - PT Chandra Asri Petrochemical Tbk has realized its commitment to tackle plastic waste through the plastic asphalt program in Garut, West Java. This program is carried out by a company owned by conglomerate Prajogo Pangestu with the Bakti Barito Foundation and in collaboration with the Indonesian Plastic Recycling Association (ADUPI).

Director of Legal, External Affairs & Circular Economy Chandra Asri Edi Rivai said the asphalt plastic program in Garut Regency is proof of the company's efforts to continue to implement and find sustainable solutions to waste problems, especially plastic waste, in Indonesia.

"We believe that the problem of plastic waste can be handled with the participation of various stakeholders. Hopefully in the future more parties will participate in this initiative to jointly support the Indonesian government in achieving its waste management goals," said Edi in his statement, Wednesday 9 March.

Garut Regency will build 50 km of asphalt roads on various roads which will be divided into several stages. The implementation of the first phase of plastic asphalt for 23 km will manage 28.8 million pieces of plastic waste such as crackle bags.

The addition of washed and chopped plastic waste into the asphalt hotmix will increase the durability and quality of the asphalt by up to 40 percent, thereby reducing damage.

This plastic asphalt cooperation in Garut will be implemented throughout 2022 to 2023. This program is estimated to be able to participate in managing waste from the Garut Final Disposal Site (TPA) of up to 216.6 tons.

On the same occasion, Garut Regent Rudy Gunawan welcomed this collaboration program in order to overcome the problem of plastic waste in Garut Regency and its surroundings. According to Rudy, the application of new innovations such as plastic asphalt is one solution that can be done to overcome environmental problems in Garut.

"I hope that this collaboration to overcome the problem of plastic waste can be carried out consistently because protecting the environment is our shared responsibility," said Rudy.

Meanwhile, Director of Bakti Barito Dian Purbasari said, this plastic asphalt program is a concrete example of how we can take innovative solutions to the problem of plastic waste. Bakti Barito welcomes the enthusiasm of the Garut Regency Government in its efforts to manage plastic waste.

"Together with Garut Regency, we also have an education program in elementary schools to increase teacher capacity and provide education for students regarding behavioral changes towards the Garut Regency Government pattern of responsible consumption behavior and preserving the environment through proper plastic management, for example the management of plastic waste in an appropriate manner. circularly into asphalt mixture," said Dian.
