KPK Expects Angelina Sondakh's Freedom To Have A Deterrent Effect

JAKARTA - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) hopes that former corruptors can give a message to those around them that the punishment for committing criminal acts is real.

This hope was also conveyed to the former member of the Indonesian House of Representatives from the Democratic Party Faction, Angelina Sondakh, who was just released today, Thursday, March 3.

"The perpetrators of corruption who have finished serving their sentences will certainly be a lesson for all of us not to do the same thing," said Acting Spokesperson for the KPK for Enforcement, Ali Fikri in a written statement, Thursday, March 3.

"We hope that the former corruption convicts can also convey a message to the entire community that the deterrent effect of punishment due to corruption is real," he added.

Ali hopes that with this kind of message, the family and colleagues of former corruption convicts can think twice before committing such a presumptuous practice. In addition, it is hoped that this deterrent effect will not make them repeat their actions.

Moreover, in the future, the KPK will ensure that it will not only focus on imprisoning perpetrators but also confiscate their assets from the proceeds of corruption as an effort to recover state assets.

"KPK does not only imprison the perpetrators of corruption but also focuses more on how to recover assets resulting from corruption so that they can return to the state as part of the deterrent effect," he said.
