Google Will Make It Easy For Users To Manually Add Passwords In Chrome, Soon!
JAKARTA - Google hasn't made Chrome the best password manager for years, and users can't add their own passwords. But apparently, that is about to change.
According to a report from Reddit user Leopeva64-2, who was the first to see the latest stable version of Chrome there was access, where users could add passwords manually.
Leopeva64-2 saw the manual password feature in Chrome Canary version 101 in 2021, the version of the Chrome browser used for beta testing new features before their release to the public. This feature is found in other password managers.
Manually adding passwords will give users better control over the stored information currently stored in the Google Chrome password manager. It also prevents the user from visiting every website and loads the details for saving.
Additionally, the new feature will also make it easier to clean up errors and situations where multiple passwords are stored without other login information, such as usernames or email addresses.
However, as reported by TechRadar, Wednesday, February 23, concerns were also raised in the same Reddit thread regarding encryption, despite the possibility that anything stored on logs will be protected along with the actual password itself.
Given that most other password management services also encrypt all information stored alongside the actual password, it's not uncommon for Google to ignore this.
As Neowin mentions in its own report, this is a feature that can also be rolled out to the Microsoft Edge web browser, considering it's also based on Chromium.
This is again nothing new to password managers, but can be very important if users want to remember the last time they changed their password or want hints for any security questions.
While this and the manual password function may take a while to reach an easily accessible setup, they are worth waiting for if users rely on Google's password tools.
