Governor Nova Asks TRC To End Human Rights Violations In Past Aceh Conflicts

BANDA ACEH - Aceh Governor Nova Iriansyah, asked the commissioners of the Aceh Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) to be able to resolve human rights violations during the past Aceh conflict.

"This completion is needed to realize sustainable peace and fulfillment of justice for victims of the Aceh conflict," said Nova Iriansyah in Banda Aceh, quoted by Antara, Saturday, February 5.

With the disclosure of the truth, Nova said, it can help achieve reconciliation between perpetrators of human rights violations, both individuals and institutions and victims.

The governor said that the data collection by the Aceh TRC for the past five years related to cases of human rights violations in Aceh still needed to be perfected.

For this reason, more accurate, systematic and coordinated works are needed in the future. This is important so that judicial (legal) and non-judicial steps can be taken to resolve the case.

"The truth disclosure carried out by the Aceh TRC is not aimed at reopening old wounds, but rather to emphasize efforts to resolve the conflict comprehensively," he said.

Nova said that the Aceh Government was fully committed to supporting the work of the TRC as a form of strengthening Aceh's peace.

So far, the Aceh Government has carried out several activities to strengthen peace, among others, peace consolidation, economic empowerment of communities and conflict victims, social services and rehabilitation for communities and conflict victims, peace education programs, and conflict prevention and mitigation.

In addition, Nova continued, there were 245 people assigned by the Aceh Government to obtain urgent reparations (recovery) according to Governor's Decree Number 330/1269/2020, the implementation of which was carried out by the Aceh Reintegration Agency (BRA).

"For cases that require urgent resolution, such as reparations for victims, they must be prioritized," he said.

Nova also asked the TRC commissioners to immediately draw up a short-term work plan and a medium-term strategic plan. Thus, cases of human rights violations in Aceh can be resolved according to an accurate concept of transitional justice.

"The existence of the Aceh Qanun Number 17 of 2013 regarding the Aceh TRC is a gift that we deserve to be grateful for, because the qanun is the legal umbrella in strengthening peace by revealing the truth about human rights violations," Nova said.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Aceh DPR, Dahlan Jamaluddin, conveyed the high hopes of all elements of the DPRA for the newly inaugurated KKR commissioners. He said the work of the commission was not only awaited by the people of Aceh, but also became a model for conflict reparation for the world.

"We also hope that the KKR commissioners report their work regularly to the DPRA," said Dahlan Jamaluddin.

To the Governor, Forkopimda and other stakeholders, Dahlan hopes that the work of the TRC is supported so that it runs according to its authority so that Aceh's peace can be maintained.
