Google is reportedly preparing a Live Translate widget for the Google Translate app on Android. This new feature allows users to start live translation from the home screen without having to open the app first.
The report comes from Android Authority which discovered the new feature while browsing the code of the Google Translate app version 10.28.62.953449214.8. The Android Authority team also managed to activate the widget and showed how it works.
On the main screen, the widget will display a button that says "Tap to start Live" along with the target language that the user has selected. When the button is pressed, the Live Translate feature will immediately be active.
Based on the screenshots shared, the widget provides a number of controls, including a button to mute the microphone, stop the translation process, and set the sound output.
The sound settings allow users to choose to mute the translation results or listen to them through the phone's speaker or earpiece. In addition, users can also change the target language directly from the widget without having to open the Google Translate app.
However, the feature still has limitations. Currently, the widget can only translate the interlocutor's speech into the language selected by the user. In contrast, the user's speech has not been translated or displayed in the interlocutor's language.
Android Authority estimates that Google can still refine the ability before the widget is released widely.
In addition to the new widget, the report also revealed that Google is preparing another improvement for the Live Translate feature. Currently, live translation can only run when the Google Translate app is open and active on the device.
However, two new lines of code found inside the app indicate that Google is developing the ability for Live Translate to continue to work even if the user exits the app.
If the feature is actually launched, users are expected to be able to control the translation process through a notification that appears on the device without having to open Google Translate again.
Previously, Google had also improved the Live Translate feature with Gemini 3.5 support to produce better translations and develop a new interface for the Google Translate application.
Until now, the Live Translate widget is said to be functional in the testing version, but it is not yet available for all Android users. Google has also not announced an official schedule for the widespread launch of the feature.
